Nincada will use their claws to dig out tunnels connecting their nests to other important areas: water sources, other trees, and exit tunnels to the surface should their nests flood from rain. Nincada builds underground nests at the roots of trees. It does not like sunlight, so it avoids it.They can spend as long as 10 years underground, making their nests between the thick roots of large trees so they do not have to travel far to find food.
